The Golden Age Is Over.

A generation that has had it’s future stolen from it can two one of two things: it can accept this fate, lay down and keep mediocrity or it can surpass it’s origins and give itself an unimaginable future from the ashes whence it came.

This is the choice we have in front of us, ladies in gentlemen. Do we rise up, take what’s been given to us and make ourselves into something useful and redefine our age? The choice belongs to each and every person of our generation, we Millennials. The Golden Age is over, it ended September 11th, 2001.

A very wise writer once wrote:

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,”

“So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

J.R.R. Tolkien’s words could never be better said for our generation that has known so much heartache in such few hours that have been given to us. Our quarter of a century lived, we have seen wars beyond all comprehension, a devastating economic blow, trampling of rights and yet here we are. We are here. We’re not going anywhere, ‘Boomers. Not for a very long time, and soon enough we’ll be in control. So what do we do with that time that is given to us? We must conquer it.

My Dad always said something to me, growing, that you have “to shoot the beast, and it’s best to shoot it in the head.” That’s what we have to do if we want to win history, everyone. Get educated, go to school, [yes] get those jobs that were promised to us and make something of ourselves. We live in a world that has seen so much, we have seen so much and there is so much more to life than what has been handed to us. We’ve been given a war-torn world, with immense problems economically, socially, and with Climate Change hot on our heels – we can’t run from this Beast. We have to take it down, limb by limb, muscle by muscle, day by day until we get to the end. There’s no going back, we aren’t getting any younger. To quote another man, Steve Jobs,

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

   – and that’s what we have to do. We have to innovate, we are in a different world than the Golden Age past. Innovation distinguishes a leader from a follower and hell, I don’t know about all of you – but I’m sick of following. The Golden Age is over, the Digital Age is here and we’re the first ones to live in it – so, what will we do with it? Shape it, mold it and make a ding in the universe or will we just let it exist and stumble along until everything that has lead up to this point falter?

We can not lose, we can not accept failure-it’s too important, know why? It’s your life. That’s how I know it’s important. It belongs to you. Thanks for being with me on the reopening of B|B|N, it’s great being back. Good night, readers, I’ll see you in the a.m.
